Also dont knock the power of a fan. I ve used window units in more side opening windows than up and down ones just due to bad luck with houses. Over the past 6 years or so i have been using three of these lg 8000 btu unit. Air conditioners just aren t built like they used to be.

A small window ac unit uses about 500 watts but a central air unit uses about 4500 watts. It gets quite humid and sometimes really hot on the east coast during the summer. They work fine just get something to block the top of the window. It seems like if i install the unit it will be resting a lot of weight on that one small strip in front which probably isn t a great idea.

Put in a mid size window ac say 7000btu and then get a nice fan to blow that air where you need it. Looking for a high quality air conditioner that hopefully will last for a longer amount of time than a few years. So basically you are saying that a central air unit cycling on and off at 4500 watts for 24 hours is going to use more power than two window units drawing 1000 watts cycling on and off for 8 hours or so. Without knowing measurements my advice is one high btu window unit if the rooms connect or 2 smaller window units for each room and keep the thermostats realistic.

Then yes you can run it non stop for the daylight hours every day. The real question is why would you. Do a search for casement window air conditioner they make skinny ones that are for side opening windows. Window units are usually the better play for residential users.

My nyc apartment lease doesn t let me screw anything into our window frame. We just got an ac for the window as it s freaking hot without one and want to know how we can get it safely installed without screwing it into the frame. The unit can only cool the roo. Versus a true portable air conditioner two hose unit or units with a condenser.

I hear good ish things about the whynter units mentioned in the thread. That being said if window units are not an option there are better units than others in the room air conditioner world.
