Adding trim to kitchen cabinet doors.
Adding trim to cabinet doors has obviously been done before.
I am thinking about doing this to our flat faced cabinet doors and.
Adding trim to cabinets.
And i know i would go positively cuckoo with a kitchen of naked cabinets and all the drawer stuff all over the house so i decided to split this up into the span of what became three days.
Remove all the hardware from the cabinet doors.
From drab to fab.
We used titebond wood glue for this step.
Cut two of the plywood strips to the height of the door and apply wood glue to the backside of each.
One day i was waiting at the paint counter at lowe s there was a bucket of yardsticks and i was thinking that i should buy wood trim that size because it s exactly the look i had in mind flat shaker style and the width of the boards were still small enough for the tiny drawers.
If it is a wooden trim simply nail it to the cabinet.
Remove your cabinet doors and place all hardware screws in a ziploc baggy.
The frame measures the exact same size as the sides and front of the cabinet.
Sand the doors lightly to remove any dirt and gloss from the old finish.
We built a frame that would sit on top of the cabinet and that we could attach the trim to the frame above the cabinet.
After adding the trim pieces to all the cabinet doors sand the edges of the trim to make everything even.
See the picture below for the before and after sanding.
As the doors ended so did the top of the cabinet.
There are lots of choices.
If trim is being placed on the cabinet doors that are lying flat the trim should be covered with a plastic wrap.
Clean your cabinet doors.
The higher the better so you aren t bending down and killing your back.
This will assure the bond is firm.
Adding trim to cabinet doors.
Trim of any type makes cabinet doors appear expensive.
Set up your doors on saw horses or somewhere easy to move around them on all sides.
I used clorox wipes which did the trick and got all the dirt and grime.
Place a weight on it and leave it for 10 to 12 hours.
This step completes the addition of trim to the kitchen.
After 10 minutes press again.
